劇情簡介：JaromilJires(1935-2001)wasaCzechfilmdirectorknownforhisboldandpoliticallychargedfilms.HegainedrecognitionwithhisFAMUgraduationfilm"TheHallway"(1958),whichmarkedhisentryintotheCzechfilmindustry.However,itwashisfilm"TheCry"(1963)thattrulybroughthimtotheforefrontofCzechoslovakcinema."TheCry"wasoneoftheearlyfilmsthatsignaledthearrivaloftheCzechNewWave,andittoldamovingstoryofayoungcoupleandtheirchildinacomplexnarrativestructure.Despiteitssubtlepoliticalimplicationsanddeparturefromsocialistrealism,theCzechauthoritiespraisedthefilmasanexampleof"positivepopularfilmmaking."Jires,however,feltuncomfortablewiththispraiseandbegantoexplorepoliticsmoreexplicitlyinhissubsequentscripts.Hisuncompromisingapproachledtohisscriptsbeingrepeatedlyrejectedbythepartyandgovernmentcensorshipauthorities.AlthoughheremainedactiveintheCzechfilmindustry,hewasbannedfromdirectingfeaturefilmsforfouryears.DuringabriefperiodofdemocratizationundertheDubcekregime,JiresreturnedtoworkandmadeacriticalrealistfilmadaptationofMilanKundera'snovel"TheJoke"(1969).Despiteitsincendiarynature,thefilmwasallowedtobereleased.JirescontinuedtomakefilmsthroughoutthenormalizationperiodthatfollowedtheSovietinvasionin1968.Oneofhisnotablefilmsduringthistimewas"ValerieandHerWeekofWonders"(1970),avisuallystunningandsurrealisticvampirestory.JirescontinuedtomakefilmsintheCzechRepublicuntilhisdeathinOctober2001.
